​We are dedicated to “developing singers for every stage”. Our singers are not simply vocalists, but trained musicians who make choices on the stage!
 
9th Grade- Explorers of the Vocal Instrument​​
​INTRODUCTION TO VOCAL- “Harnessing the Creative Voice”​​
FALL: Arts Rotation (Dance, Theater, Instrumental, Vocal)                      SPRING: Beginning Chorus            
This four-unit course is an introductory course in vocal methods for all students. Students will make creative choices in vocal performance by understanding the basic elements of sound, the technical facility of the vocal instrument, and various stylistic uses. Through a choral introduction to exercises that develop the motor (breathing), vibrator (vocal chords), and resonator (mouth/tongue) of vocal instrument, students are inspired to be both technically sound and freely expressive as a vocalist. The course will culminate in a choral presentation of songs from various styles and periods.
 
10th Grade Pre-Majors- Investigators of the Vocal Instrument
PRE-MAJORS VOCAL- “From the Stage to the Studio”
FALL: Intermediate Chorus                                                                                 SPRING: Music Theory I             
This six-unit course is designed for the vocal pre-major to build on their understanding of the vocal instrument by moving from group to solo performances showing creativity and technical awareness. Students will explore the choral/solo repertoire of various styles of music and begin to investigate ways of understanding the musicianship/theory underlying these styles. The course will culminate in a jury performance/audition of two selections before a panel of professional vocal artists.
 
11th Grade Majors- Developers of the Vocal Instrument ​
MAJORS VOCAL I- “From Broadway to the Met”
FALL: Vocal Repertoire I & Music Theory II                                                      SPRING: Vocal Repertoire II & Music Theory III
These two six-unit courses are designed for the vocal major to build on their understanding musicianship and the vocal instrument by crafting engaging solo performances showing creativity and technical facility. Through further exploration of solo Classical/Musical Theater repertoire and deeper study in college level music theory, students will demonstrate the marks of polished vocal musician. The course will culminate in a jury performance of two selections before a panel of professional vocal artists and a solo at the NYSSMA Festival.
 
12th Grade Majors- Evaluators/Coaches of the Vocal Instrument ​
MAJORS VOCAL II- “Leaving ‘Em Wanting More” 
FALL: Vocal Recital & Music History I                                                                   SPRING: Opera Workshop & Music History II
These two six-unit courses are designed to prepare the senior vocal major to demonstrate professionalism and versatility in their art form. Through the expansion of the vocal art to recital preparation,  and transition from music learner to music leader, students will understand that the true professional in the vocal arts is ready for any challenge. The course will culminate in both a jury recital of three selections before a panel of professional vocal artists, and completion of the N.Y.S. Arts Exit Exams in Music, which includes a NYSSMA solo.
